Romania’s energy transition and the assumed targets require strategy, specialists and money. But, beyond financiers, developers and producers, the market needs service providers and expertise.<\/strong> “We have a growth strategy for the coming years based mainly on what is happening in the energy transition. Our vision, which will probably, at some point, also turn into a program, is to be the main facilitator of energy transition in Romania in the energy area. Because we say that we are active in several components of the energy transition”   <\/p>\n\n

 “We are very involved in digitalization, with smart metering, smart metering, smart grid systems; now we are very involved in renewable projects and this is where one of the major growth components comes from, which is generated by what happens in solar energy projects.” <\/p>\n\n

 Why do we “prosume”?<\/strong> Over 40,000 Romanians were prosumers at the end of last year, with a total installed capacity of over 400 MW, according to the National Energy Regulatory Agency (ANRE). Prosumers are those who install capacities of up to 400 kW, both for their own consumption and to inject into the grid, when they produce over consumption.  With the energy crisis triggered by the Russian invasion of Ukraine, more and more companies and people want to become prosumers, in a wave fueled both by a drop in panel prices and by subsidies and funds offered through various government programs. “It’s good that there is this appetite and we are still at the beginning. Romania had less than 20,000 prosumers a year or so ago, now we are approaching 50,000 and there are serious prerequisites to reach 100,000 prosumers by 2025. I wouldn’t be surprised if we reach this level next year. It’s not a bad thing. What we should do at the country level is a medium-term strategy related to prosumers.” In the absence of a strategy, Romania could end up in a situation where it will have to take measures to calm the wave of prosumers, because there are areas of the country where projects can no longer be developed at the same pace due to the network. “There should be coordination between Romania’s targets, the current and predictable capacity of distribution facilities to take over energy and a regulatory policy of ANRE in the development of distribution networks, which should be balanced from this point of view. The owner of the network should do what it has to do to facilitate the connection of projects and impose on those who install certain measures in such a way as not to cause damage to the network.” Prosumers are a factor that Corneliu Bodea describes as “correct decarbonization”, as the installation of production capacities at consumers also means energy efficiency. “We are talking about energy efficiency because it is produced where it is consumed, especially in the industrial case where you produce and consume at about the same time. It is also about digitalization, because we need smart grids that can balance this decentralized power supply and it is about the decentralization of the energy production system, this being one of the objectives.” The strategy must be implemented now, as long as their share in the total energy mix is imperceptible, but when prosumers will represent 1 GW, the evolution of this segment could face challenges and slow down. At the same time, prosumers could also help with the energy efficiency target assumed by Romania at European level.        “Energy efficiency is perhaps the smartest way to fight climate change and reduce dependence on the resources of the Russian Federation. There is a lot of pressure to continue, we just need a little coherence in plans, legislation, secondary regulations.” On the one hand, prosumers are also putting pressure on distributors to improve their networks and invest more in digitalization. On the other hand, the entrepreneur believes that it is the consumer’s right to produce their own energy. To do this as efficiently as possible, prosumers should also invest in storage capacity.    “They are expensive, but if we think about a home where production is done during the day while the sun is shining, and consumption more in the evening when we get home and no longer produce, the difference is significant. When you produce energy, you put it into the grid at the cost of production, and when you take it, the price is with the tariff. From this difference, not in two or three years, but in five or seven years you also recover the investment in the storage facility.” Indeed, the cost of batteries could fall in the long run, but the price reduction will not be as great as with photovoltaic panels. At least not in the absence of revolutionary new technological breakthroughs.    “I was looking at a graph, in the 70s, the panels cost 70 dollars per watt, today it’s 0.2 euros per watt. I don’t expect the same thing to happen with batteries, but they will get cheaper. Maybe they will halve, but I don’t think more. We are limited by technology.”   <\/p>\n\n
